Whilst our new vessel was still in the builders yard, DEME, a Belgian dredging company awarded RollDock part of the sea transportation scope for a huge dredging project near the Port of Sabetta, Russia.
About the project
A contract was signed in Russia between OJSC ‘USK MOST’ and DEME’s Russian subsidiary MORDRAGA to construct the approach channel and harbor basin for the service port of the new LNG terminal in the Yamal Peninsula and the sea channel in Ob Bay, 2,500 km North East of Moscow. This new facility in the north of Russia will act as an export port for LNG carriers en-route to clients located in both the East and Western regions.
The Artic conditions in this part of the world make it an extremely challenging place to work.The most accessible period (the potentially “Ice Free” period) is between July and September – classed as the “Summer Months”. It is during this period that the execution of most projects in this region are planned.
The Sabetta dredging project will be executed by a whole fleet of dredgers - among them will be a cutter suction dredger, two split hopper barges, six trailing suction hopper dredgers, ten auxiliary vessels, pontoons, a multicat and an accommodation vessel to house the work crews.
The execution of this contract was based on loading by the combined methods of Flo/Flo as well as Lo/Lo. The following cargo was successfully loaded for transportation:
Loading by the Flo/Flo method:
- Floating Hoses with length of 100 mtr;
- Pontoon “Otter” – 30 x 11 x draft 1.95 mtr;
- Multicat “Zwerver III “ - dims: 27 x 11 x draft 1.50 mtr.
Loading by the Lo/Lo method:
- M/V “LIZ V” a High Speed Crew Tender – dims: 32 x 7.5 x 4.00 mtr ~abt 250 ts;
- M/V “Friendship” supporting vessel;
- M/V “ Guardian” – dims: 23 x 6.5 x 7 mtr ~abt 75 ts;
- M/V “Fastnet Rock” a passenger transfer boat – dims 22 x 7.5 x 3 mtr.
Once loading was completed, a representative from DEME commented: “I would like to thank the Captain and his crew, also the operational team, For the great cooperation we had during the loading of our equipment at Zeebrugge”.
After lashing and securing the cargo, the RollDock Storm set sail towards Sabetta. After a 10 day stop at Murmansk to complete the custom formalities and approvals needed to sail the Northern Sea Route (NSR), the RollDock Storm sailed via the Barents and Kara Seas to reach the final discharging location in Sabetta.
